Giacomo Fenocchio

Thrust into running this estate south of Alba, in Piedmont, at a young age – just as his father, who gave his name to the label, before him – Claudio Fenocchio had a choice to make: maintain the Barolo tradition of producing tannin-heavy wines which age well, or follow the modernists into producing wines which can be drunk young. He decided on a third way: radical traditionalism, producing Fenocchio Barolo which can be drunk young but gets better with age…

The Fenocchios have been growers in Monforte for generations, but it was with Giacomo, in the seventies, the began the sale of its wines. The winery was founded in 1864 and today are Albino and Claudio Fenocchio at the lead of this incredible winery. The production philosophy that distinguishes this historic Piedmont company is traditionalist, made of hard work in the vineyards and winemaking with long use for the maturation of large barrels in the cellar. The result is amazing: a fine wine, played on elegance and delicate tones of the variety of Nebbiolo. The grapes are grown in the vineyard Bussia, 4 hectares of land facing south-west, rich in clay and iron. Since 1972, the company also owns a vineyard in Cannubi, and since 1995 in Villero, another historic cru, highly suited. Cultivation in all the vineyards is based on the principles of sustainability to reduce more and more the environmental impact. All this has led Claudio to make wine with a sure hand, without consultation, in the traditional way and with minimal intervention in the cellar, resulting in wines sincere, respectful of the terroir and the vintage; wines away from the approval, but incredibly fascinating for their intense flavours and aromas: in a word, unique. The words of Claudio explain the philosophy behind the production of these pearls of Piedmont wine: “Our wines are left five months in stainless steel vats and two years in large capacity oak casks and aged in the bottle for one year. The passage of time will give complex and intriguing aromas, for palates ready to seize the pleasure of never predictable aspects.” say Claudio.
