Tenuta Garetto
The Gagliardo family acquired the Tenuta Garetto winery in July of 2017. The winery is located in Agliano Terme, a very well-known and recognized spot for Barbera. The winery is in the heart of the new Nizza DOCG appellation of Monferrato.
Monferrato Astigiano is a sweet, sunny and energetic land. The municipality of Agliano Terme in particular has often been described as “the village of Barbera”. It is part of the newborn DOCG (created in 2014) and is characterised by sandy marls that give strong and attractive wines with unusual longevity.
‘A couple of years ago we started to explore opportunities,’ Stefano Gagliardo said.
He added that Nizza combines two important elements; organised producers and well-suited soil.
‘The position and the soils are simply fantastic to grow Barbera,’ he said.
‘It is unquestionable that most of the best expressions of this grape are from that specific corner of Piedmont. With my brothers, we do see a strong similarity between Barolo and Nizza. In both cases there is a special connection of grape variety and place.’
The estate can count on old vines planted between 1935 and 1950, as well as more recent vineyards. Vinification takes place in the cellar adjacent to the vineyards.
Gagliardo added that the organisation of producers is also impressive. ‘The new appellation shows that there is a group of intelligent producers that are keen to join forces and are looking to the future.’
Gagliardo said that he and his brothers ‘fell in love’ with Garetto when they saw the estate, with “great old vines there, superb soil and exposure”.
