Tahbilk Winery
The story of Tahbilk Winery begins with the land and the river. The place is known as tabilk-tabilk, ‘place of many waterholes’ in the language of the Daung-wurrung clans, the first people; a name which perfectly describes the landscape.
Established in 1860, Tahbilk is known to be one of the most beautiful and historic family owned winery in Australia, located in one of the nation’s premium viticultural areas. The property itself comprises some 1,214 hectares of rich river flats with a frontage of 11 kms to the Goulburn River and 8 kms of permanent backwaters and creeks.
In 2013 Tahbilk became carbon neutral. An extension of the work already completed to restore the delicate balance once known by the Daung-wurrung clans.
Purchased by the Purbrick family in 1925, Tahbilk is home to 5 generations.
Their promise to their customers is the creation of prestigious wines and experiences worth sharing which celebrate their history and commitment to a sustainable legacy for future generations.
The estate has some 200 hectares of vineyards specialising in grape varietals from the Rhone including whites varietals: Marsanne, Viognier and Roussanne and red varietals Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre. Also growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Verdelho grapes.
Tahbilk has a long history of producing fine wines with the help of rich ferric-oxide/sandy loam soils and temperate climate. With over 150 years of winemaking experience you are sure to find some absolute gems in the Tahbilk repertoire. Whether it be ‘1860 Vines’, ‘Eric Stevens Purbrick’ or the (far from) standard Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, there is a history and character with both varietals that goes back generations.
This year, Tahbilk Winery has been awarded Winery Of The Year by The Wine Companion Winery Awards that recognise the very best of Australian wine productions across the country.
